Volkswagen's team of two Syncro 4WD's (the only 2 RHD 16" models ever produced) competed in the 1990 Australian Safari to prove that standard vehicles could successfully compete against the highly modified prototype vehicles. That a private entrant still had that chance of winning against the professional rally drivers is amazing, and indeed win they did in their class - under 2.5 litres. Competing were Graham Lees of Northshore Volkswagen (Dual Cab) and Dave Berry of Trakka (16" High Top). You can see recent pictures of the same 2 vehicles at http://www.syncro.com.au/g/RHD-16inch-Syncros-Australia

  • Alo, One difference from the 16" production vehicles was that the protective wax coatings were left off at the factory to aid with 'on-the-run' repairs during the safari.

  • Well 2138 LHD 16" models were bulit in series production, however, the 16" was never marketed in RHD countries. The 16" is definitely a production vehicle. However, you are right, all vehicles sent to RHD countries were the 14" model, and yes. some had the optional Rear Diff Lock. So yes, these 2 are not the standard production vehicles that Australia saw, but are of themselves production vehicles.

  • To prove that standard vehicles could successfully compete etc. But their not standard their 16" and double lockup diffs only 2 RHD ever built. One can hardly say they are production vehicles. The standard came out with 14" wheels and lighter suspension set up and some with a rear lock up diff as an optional extra. They are a fantastic vehicle and I would be very happy to own one but no these two are not standard.
