This isn't an attack. It is a response to some things being said and some resentment being displayed towards people trying to help. They may not be the most gentle, but their intentions are good.

  • My senior fellow apprentice tells me that everybody who takes on iaido WILL have this experience. Good Japanese blades have a piece of metal inside the saya to keep it from cutting your hand.

  • @RaiAntou Partially true, partially not.

SOME iaidoka will experience this, but cutting the inside of the saya is a result of incorrect form. If a student is cutting through the inside of their saya, chances are, they were moved up to shinken too soon. Ideally, over the course of training with bokken and mogito, the technique required to not cut the saya will be ingrained in the muscle memory of the iaidoka.

  • @RaiAntou As far as metal in the saya, I have seen copper once, but I generally hear of iaizaya being fitted with a horn slab along the ha of the saya as opposed to metal. Most saya have nothing extra added in.

This is, of course, an emergency failsafe in the event of a bad nukiuchi and should not be relied upon to keep the blade from cutting through.

  • Everyone, I'm bowing out of UBC. Getting threats of a lawsuit from the person I try to help, and the fact that it is no longer fun in general due to recent events, kinda ruins the mood. Sorry Jonis, and sorry UBC.

  • Not always amigo. Sometimes martial artists rank on backyard cutters just because they are childish snobs. That being said, after having heard this tale about a slashed hand, I'm going to spend some extra time on my Iaido practice. lol

  • @Hyoujinsama u are such a cool mellow guy!! ive learned alot some really serious core basics from youre videos!! but people need to realize that what they are doing is using a weapon that was intended to kill people!! it is sharp!! u can lose a finger or two or three if u r not careful!! i usually use a dulled katana or bokken for practice so stuff like this dosnt happen although i do own a scarry sharp one. however people should stick to the basics because the devil is in the details!!

  • @Hyoujinsama The thing about the internet is, you have the real martial artists who have trained for years, and then you have the people who watched an hour long martial arts instructional DvD who automatically think they are martial arts experts. I'm pretty sure you've had these kind of people comment on your videos, you know, they go like this, "U sux! My ninja punch would break that sword in half! I can do everything better than you"..Those kind of people, really ruin everything for everyone.

  • hmmm....so when are you going to do the video on warning people not to do business with unscrupulous customizers that steal money and swords from trusting customers....oh thats right.....because it was YOU! Love to hear your response if you or your wife ever come out of hiding.

  • Calm, on topic, accurate, unbiased, valid and informative. You sir get an HD.

  • You inspire me. Would like you to be my master, but you're so far away xD

  • Amen to this vid.

i've been a martial artist for a few years (Tang soo do) and Recently started Iaido, back in my un-trained cutting days i had this happen to me, my cheness tenchi took a nice bite out of my hand.

  • Kevin, you are absolutly rigth , good form and do not rush, learn the basics and practice them untill you are capable to perform them at any speed.

And please people If you take ANY SHARP OBJECT on your hand be carefull exercise caution & do not try to SUE the person wo forge the blade or the store wo sell it to you, try and Sue your parents for your own lack of brain.

  • @Hyoujinsama Well, they're playing with swords... Perhaps if those people don't want to go to a dojo it's best to let them learn the hard way. I enjoy and learn from your videos Hyoujinsama and it's sad to hear that they'd threaten you for trying to help.

  • @Hyoujinsama OH NO! The coolest person that I usualy watch from UBC is leaving =_(, I can't belive the selfish person who you tried to help is threatening a lawsuit against you... Come to think of it, I hope that person loses a limb next time he picks up a sharp object. I have high respect for you and I thank you for all of your videos, it has been very helpful to me.
