April 9th Hampshire England - Korean paper says Gobi sand radioactive - Yellow dust from China found to be radioactive. Yellow dust blowing over Korea from China every year is believed to contain radioactive material presumed to have been leaked from nuclear power plants in the neighbouring country, a state think tank said yesterday.

Small amounts of cesium-137, a highly radioactive material, have been detected in Korea's air and soil between February and April - when the dust gets most serious - over the past 10 years, the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety said in a report submitted to an opposition lawmaker.

Yellow dust - fine sand blown from the Gobi Desert in China and Mongolia every spring that sometimes includes toxic chemical smog emitted by Chinese factories - can cause respiratory disorders.

The atmospheric concentration of cesium-137 reached 252 becquerels per cubic meter, especially when the yellow dust continued for up to 11 days, the institute said. The most recent figure was 89.6 becquerels per cubic meters, a relatively high amount, measured for three days in March last year.

On Saturday, Korea was put under the first yellow dust advisory of the year.

Because the substance mostly is a product of artificial nuclear fission, it usually does not occur in nature to any significant degree until nuclear weapons testing begins.

A cesium concentration of more than 50,000 becquerels per cubic meter is considered harmful to the human body.

  • It happened all over usa a year or two ago. But I guess was pollen because there are barely any honey bees left.

  • @91177info This happened back in the 90's too. No-one would believe me then either. But sand can get sucked up into the upper atmosphere, getting a carried thousands of mile before getting dumped.

  • epic fail, this is pollen not sand...sand would not stick to your fingers with that consistency nor would it clump up like in some of the photos.. FAIL

  • interesting...while it is spring, i wouldn't dismiss other concerns out of hand...do you know someone with a microscope? Grit/sand/dirt looks very different than pollen...we have had an epidemic of dirt from somewheres, and before you try to tell this asthmatic that it's pollen, explain how it landed on our mountaintops and melted all the snow, and our plants not even out yet....thank you for the report on this-is there an update? }:-

  • FFS it's Pollen.

Here in California I deal with that crap on my wind shields during this time of year.

Sand does not cake like that in dry weather.

Pollen however cakes naturally as you can clearly see the layers on the windshield in the video.

Honey bee and Carpenter bees dragging that stuff all over the place.

High pollen season, ANYONE who has allergies can tell you what you are seeing in this video.

Theres your test subject. Knock yourself out.

I'll be sneezing all the way to the bank.

  • if the guy sez it is sand then it is sand...the saharan winds blow this stuff out over the atlantic all the time. that some change of wind direction would steer the dust north is not a problem in my mind. either way it is nothing to worry about.

  • Its called pollen!

  • it's pollen

  • Further proof that the Moslems are taking over Europe. LOL
