I'm not sure about date - but looking at Mike Hyman (drums) who was 13 in 1967 when Joe signed with Milestone in San Francisco I think 1977 is right (anyway that's the information that was given to me). It was filmed by Swiss-Italian TV company andf later shown (in the 90's I believe) by the French TV channel Messo. So this looks like it's a tour date - Anyone got any more reliable info? Anyway here's the line-up: Steve Erquiaga - guitar; Ratzo Harris - bass; Mike Hyman - drums.( I believe these three guys were active in the Bay area around this time too.)

  • Marvelous! And what a treat to see a very young Mike Hyman! I met Mike in 1979 when he was 20 touring with trumpeter John McNeil. They also did a big band seminar with the band I played in. i was 14 and was totally blown away by Mike´s drumming. What a ugely underrated talent!!!!

  • The Thinking Mans Tenor........

  • @Aaronlongville Jimi was dead by 1977, kinda looks like Stanley Clarke to me (it's definitely not though), lol!

  • I wish I'd gotten to see him live!

  • Yes, it is 1977, probably around March: it was then when I saw this same quartet at the Bergamo Jazz festival, in northern Italy; from there to Lugano, Switzerland, where this set was probably recorded, its about an hour by car.

  • Joe was such a sound musician. He was fearless and so exciting saxophonist. The tenor saxophonists of today make me nuts in how 99% of them just copy Trane, Brecker or Rollins. But Joe was totally his own man.

  • At 3.25, is that Jimi Hendrix Filming Joe? Haha I guess even the greatest of musicians had day jobs at some point .

  • Joe had it all and then some..what a player...

  • mmmmmm yea
