A beautiful song from disc 1, "A Sea of Honey" on her 2005 album "Aerial". The male vocal is by Michael Wood.

Lyrics:

There's a city, draped in net
Fisherman net
And in the half light, in the half light
It looks like every tower
Is covered in webs
Moving and glistening and rocking
It's babies in rhythm
As the spider of time is climbing
Over the ruins

There were hundreds of people living here
Sails at the windows
And the planes came crashing down
And many a pilot drowned
And the speed boats flying above
Put your hand over the side of the boat
What do you feel?

My mother and her little brown jug
It held her milk
And now it holds our memories
I can hear her singing
"Little brown jug don't I love thee"
"Little brown jug don't I love thee"
Ho ho ho, hee hee hee

I hear her laughing
She is standing in the kitchen
As we come in the back door
See it fall See it fall
Oh little spider climbing out of a broken jug
And the pieces will lay there a while
In a house draped in net
In a room filled with coral
Sails at the window
Forests of masts
Put your hand over the side of the boat
Put your hand over the side of the boat
What do you feel?

  • Love all your videos, thanks for sharing them with me :)

  • @skycladwow You're welcome!

  • I love your stuff on the whole, particularly Architect's Dream, but I think this is one that's better off left in your head - mainly because of the dense metaphorical content, I guess. There's another reason as well: this is about grief through a personal loss and memory best left well alone I think. Nothing to do with the qaulity o your production -superb.

  • I have never made a video for "An Architect's Dream". I think you are confusing with someone else.

And as I said, I had a request for this song. I had also thought about doing it myself. And I worked very hard on this video. In general I think that "Aerial" is the hardest one to make videos for of all of Kate's albums.

  • I must say that there's such multi-layered imagery in this song that the visuals are a distraction - no disrespect to whomever put them together though.

  • It was me who put them together. I got a request for this song and I thought this was a nice opportunity to try something new and be a little more experimental. So I thought I'd make a combination of photos and video clips. The video was also meant as a celebration of Kate's 50th birthday.

    what a woman!! i love her !!!

she is send like an angel in our dirty world from godfather himself!!1

many greetings from an engineer from berlin to ALL fans

  • This is such a sad and beautiful song. I've never heard anything like it - it's like Philip Pullman's Subtle Knife, it somehow seems to open up another world in a strange way. I feel a bit embarrassed about this but I just cry buckets everytime I listen. I think I'll try something a bit more upbeat now.

  • thanks to symphony for all your work

  • @mtopper66 I haven't shed buckets, though I don't think its because of Kate. I'm just a robot.

  • an unbelievably beautiful song, but 1:25 to 1:50 is just .... i don't know .... i can't find the right words ... it's such a sublime melody it's beyond melody. if there was a heaven, some of it would be just this 25 seconds played continuously. i can't imagine getting tired of it.

  • The real question is: who *hasn't* shed buckets every single time they hear this song?? Has a more emotionally heart-wrenching track EVER been written by ANYONE? Seriously...?!!

  • A few tears rather.

  • Yeah I've shed a few times listening to that bit about the little brown jug.... but on a geeky note, if you want your upload to fill the whole screen export it as NTSC or 29 frames per sec (even if it is PAL) from your app. or from your media convertor. Youtube is American.

  • Not a dry eye left after this song.

  • This song kills me. Heartbreaking and beautiful

  • A very nice tribute from Kate to her late mother.... Haunting song if ever there was one....
