A fine old Scottish folk song that my Scottish Mother and Auntie used to sing to me when I was a wee an . This song dates back to the 17th Century.
There are many variations in the lyrics of this great song and different takes on the storyline. My understanding is that A Shepherdess and the son of a Laird fall in love, but his snobbish parents ban him from seeing her.
Cowdenknowes is in the Borders region in south east Scotland.
The broom is a yellow flowering shrub that grows prolificly there, and is related to the wytch hazel. Probably the best recorded version of this song is by Borders artist Archie Fisher

  • @jhankri Like many of their traditional songs there are several variations of the tune and lyrics. As they travel through time and space people tend to adapt them to suit their own interpretation. The pictures are from the area where the song originated.. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment it is very much appreciated Barbara.

    Fond Regards

    Paul and Jim
