acually if you time it right you jump slightly over it and dont get hit. if im right he's playing it off of an emulator but that dosnt mean its tool assisted

Yeah, the hit detection in SMB wasn't very good, so you could hit the outer edges of the piranha plants and take no damage, without any cheats or anything. I've done it, on world 4-1 it's rather easy to do.
Also running over holes is no cheat. You can do it at full speed.
