@etonks Even with the mercury in them, CFL bulbs release less Mercury when improperly disposed than Standard light bulbs. The mercury released into the atmosphere from burning the coal to power them is something like 10X the mercury inside the bulb. Since standard bulbs use 3x the power, using them still releases twice the mercury into the environment than improperly disposed CFL bulbs. They are just that little bit extra better when properly disposed of.

You can't do much with the curly cue CFL bulbs, can you? Can they even be recycled? I mean crushed up and remelted into new glass? They have quite a lot of mercury in them. So, now I am thinking...exactly how are they disposed of when no longer good? Are they actually better? Or do they create a whole new problem? Hmmmm I have to look into that.
