i guess he figured that if the rear got loose and he went into the trees he was done for anyway. The helmet might just prolong what could be a short, quick death.

That is the smartest thing I have seen in a while... drag racing an 1/8th mile in a soft top with no helmet or harness with tress all along the side of the road.
