U.S. Ambassador to Chile, Paul Simons, attended the ceremony celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Torres del Paine National Park on May 13. Against the stunning backdrop of Torres del Paine, the Executive Director of CONAF, Catalina Bau, the Intendente of Magallanes and Antarctica, Mario Maturana, and local historian Mateo Martinic all paid homage to the park in a ceremony that celebrated its history, honored its directors, rangers and supporters, and highlighted the park's natural beauty. CONAF Regional Director Juan José Romero and current park Director Jose Linnebrink also participated in the event. In addition to laudatory letters from the Ministers of Agriculture and Environment, moderators read a congratulatory letter from the Department of State Acting Assistant Secretary, Ambassador Reno Harnish. A major land donor to the park was honored by changing the name of one of the main administrative buildings to Villa Monzino. After the official part of the ceremony, an enthusiastic crowd welcomed an enchanting performance by one of Chile 's most beloved musical groups, los Jaivas. His trip also included a visit to Punta Arenas, the American Corner, and a keynote speech at Universidad de Magallanes
