Of course this is real. I've seen it dozens of times. The huge arc is due to high current that's actually vaporizing small amounts of metal of other conducting material from the switch contacts. The higher the humidity, the more spectacular the display too. It's not everyday you open a 500 KV switch, but it's done all the time. Most switches employ arc supression which minimizes the area for the arc to exist, while supplying a secondary path for the energy to be dissipated. (Shunt).
It's real.

That was awsome. I could see how people would say that looked fake... but I have seen this happen IRL so...

@BlueSparks25 I am and this IS real and Petrifying! Thats why now they use instead of giant switches semiconductors called thyristors! (which they are big too) Thyristors regulate the voltage by a pulse input! Check it out at wikipedia...

as an electrician for a supply authority in australia.. im telling you theres no doubt this is real.. ive seen it before when a worker opened the air break switch "on load".. wasnt as big as this as it was only 132KV but theres no mistaking this is not a fake

so, err, avoiding starting an argument, but what makes you think its fake? ive seen a 100kv switch open; its a lot smaller than this, but still seriously impressive. what makes you think some1 put time and effort into making a fake, when they could have just done it for real?
