Fire is an essential management tool for native prairie in the midwestern United States. Before the white man arrived in North America, fires were used by Native Americans to return nutrients to the soil and control unwanted vegetation. When whitey arrived, fires were suppressed, invasive (and less nutritious) grasses grew wildly, and native prairie shrank to only tiny parcels. It was only recently that we have come to understand the importance of fire and its benefits. Learn how native prairie benefits from the use of fire, and how the biodiversity and health of the prairie and is making a comeback. This was filmed in SE Iowa in April, 2011. Music (Variation on Egmont) by Kevin Macleod (incompetech.com). Videography and editing by: Billy Berger

Very cool video. The natives used fire to manage the land here too in Western Oregon. It made it a much more agreeable place to live. less underbrush and poisen oak. What was left was clean rolling hills and big trees. Made for some great foraging. Thanks for sharing some real cool pics. Great burn! Dan

Very interesting video Billy and Teddy. Takiing things back to the beginning is a good thing. Through up a quick vid on how it looks after a week, month etc so we can see how it works.
By the way, Billy great article in Primitive Archer. Ugly points = better aim
