I think also there was no proof that he did it. It was almost proved when 2 of Jill Dando's neighbours found her body after George ran off and they failed to identify him at an identification parade

Barry George was also questioned over the Rachel Nickell murder?
Seems the met couldn't fit him up for that so they waited and fitted him up for Jill's murder.

Nope, he got freed on appeal and looking at it, there was only a single speck of evidence against him and once that had been deiscredited, there was nothing to convict him on.
It looks as though he was stitched up, similar to the way they stitched up Colin Stagg for Rachel Nickell. It's a shame as the Met Police are capable of exceptional investigative work, as exemplified by the Operation Paget report into the death of Diana.
