According to John McWhorter, author of "Winning the Race: Beyond the Crisis in Black America," black activism is lost on today's culture. McWhorter explains his theory of modern activism or what he calls, "therapeutic alienation." This is the act of shaking your fists at the system claiming institutional racism. He and Doug delve into the topics the book covers, exploring the excuses and dependencies history and society have created for black Americans. McWhorter also shares his views on the impact of divisive racial issues such as the hip hop culture and Hurricane Katrina. (Taped 5/9/2006)

  • Great, ty for the upload :)

  • @JayGatsbyOdysseus

I'd like to see him debate William Julius Wilson. Wilson puts more emphasis on high black male joblessness as the main thing that has affected black family formation. With the unemployment numbers that black males have it's not surprising that many wouldn't be in the best position to settle down, get married and raise families. My solution is a bigger increase in black business ownership so blacks can create more jobs for themselves.

  • Stanford John McWhorter should debate Harvard Cornel West. I would pay to see this. The race ideas actually fit into the economic ideas. In other words, capitlalism and socialism. Black people have been marginalized by employers over many, many years. Thus, they will need more help than white people. So, social services are going to be used for higher percentage of black people. I think I would agree with Cornel West more than McWhorter, and I am white.

  • This man is amazing.
