Well, since we really became our own country, the last time was really the War of 1812, where Washington DC was burned down.

You could count World War Two, when the Japanese occupied the Aleutian Islands also.

@AlienExperiment94 No, impossible, it all basically came down to logistics.  Even if the war would have continued for another year or two, then the Germans would have began running out of resources really quick. I.E. men, equipment, fuel, all those sorts of things.
