The Beauty of Green: Locally Owned Hair Salon Makes Commitment toReduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Sandusky, Ohio Owner Lisa Hartnett of Hair Illusions located at 2309 Cleveland Road has been taking steps in order to decrease her carbon footprint while providing her clients with a safe, earth-friendly salon experience.
Hartnett, a professional hair stylist for over 20 years and certified yoga instructor, has been working closely with local entrepreneur, Sherry Huron of the Not Just Soap Company out of Fremont, Ohio, developing skin care products used exclusively during manicures, pedicures and other spa treatments the salon offers. The spa products range from sea salts and sugar scrubs to luxurious body butter and handmade soaps, all made with 100% organic ingredients and essential oils.
Hartnett uses Aquage for her hair care line, which contains plant-derived ingredients in its products. This company is another regional business, located in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. By purchasing her products locally, she is able to reduce not only her overall costs, but also the amount of greenhouse gases used during shipping.
In her research for products that provide safe alternatives to conventional ones, Hartnett discovered Spa Rituals, a vegan nail care and color line. Spa Rituals is DVP-free, allowing for women who are pregnant to get pampered without having to worry about chemicals entering their blood streams. Unless otherwise specified, most conventional products are added with harmful preservatives to increase shelf life. What Hartnett uses for her spa treatments only requires a small amount of product for the desired effect because without the usual 'fillers' found in beauty products, there is high concentration of safe, active ingredients.
As the word is spreading about the changes being made at Hair Illusions, Hartnett is pleased by the way her clients have responded.

"This is all we have and we have to take care of it. By making these changes, it increases communication about not only what goes in our bodies and on our bodies. Anybody can grab a product and put it on, but when you educate somebody and tell them what they may be using could potentially cause cancer, damage their reproductive system, or cause pigmentation problems, it's nice to show them a label to let them know nothing in these products is going to hurt them," explains Hartnett. "My philosophy is based on a quote from Gandhi, 'Be the change you wish to see in the world.' Quite a few of my clients are teachers and can relate to this. They trust the research I've done in order to bring them quality products and services."
"I really enjoy what I do, and I like that I we have products that can benefit the clients and are better for the environment," agrees spa technician, Amanda *. "It's great that we can provide completely 'green' pedicures," she emphasizes, referring to the 100% recyclable and PVC-free Walk Away flip flops clients can wear home after having their toes treated. Amanda also helps Hartnett in making the eco-friendly disinfectants used to clean the salon utensils and spa areas, a peroxide formula they learned from Sherry Huron.
Along with the various product lines, Hartnett also sells a variety of Boo Boo Bags including their 'Green Chic' reusable totes and therapeutic pouches made of recyclable materials.
In order to increase her clients' participation in her green initiatives, for every empty product container brought back to Hair Illusions for recycling, Hartnett is offering a 10% discount off any product of the client's choice.
