Glen E. Friendman Exhibition Overview for the Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture Touring Exhibition - 2006
Glen E. Friedman is considered one of the most important photographers of his generation. A bicoastal native, he became well known for working with such rebellious musicians as Fugazi, Black Flag, Ice-T, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Misfits, Bad Brains, Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, and Public Enemy, as well as old school skateboarders Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Alan "Ollie" Gelfand, Duane Peters, and Stacy Peralta among others. Many of his photographs are recognized as the subjects definitive portraits. His graphic documents of underground youth rebellion reveal the defiance upon which they are based and reflect the spirit of progression and angst that defined an era. His uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time helped define the moment and movements he was caught up in. Three volumes of his photographs have been published to date: Fuck You Heroes (1994), Fuck You Too (1996), and The Idealist (1998). Friedman has exhibited his work internationally including solo exhibitions at the ICA in London and Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea in Rome. Friedman also was a producer of the award winning documentary film Dogtown and Z-Boys (2001) and currently lives in New York City.
