The Bornean elephant sub-species was recently confirmed as a new taxon endemic to Borneo, dramatically increasing its importance in terms of biodiversity. Current estimates reveal that about 1,200-1,500 elephants are surviving in Borneo, most of them being found in eastern Sabah in highly fragmented populations. The Bornean elephant is thus the worlds most endangered member of the Proboscidae family, highlighting the urgent need to undertake sound conservation action. With a total size of 150 to 170 individuals (source: KOCP), the Kinabatangan elephants are one of the priority populations in Borneo.

Watch this short video from KOCP highlighting the wildlife and communities of the Lower Kinabatangan.
