well, comparing based on this recording would be rather unfair. as fabulous as joan is here, she was 3X this fabulous in her prime (let's face it, you have to be a pretty bad ass 64 year old woman to be singing coloratura roles lol). as a whole though, I think June Anderson has an absolutely lovely voice, but Semiramide is a Queen, she demands authoritative singing. as far as basses go, this guy is wonderful, but he's no Samuel Ramey.
This was spectacular live! All her soft singing just reached out and filled the hall and when she let rip it was unbelievable. The sound was so rich and spine tinglling that it is hard to judge on a clip like this! I heard her in sydney from '74 to '86 and they were unbelievable and unrepeatable nights. Hearing Alessandra Marc live is the closest thing to the spine tingling sensation that Joan generated when heard live.
You would do better to get the CD of the Boston performance in 1965--it's very comparable to the incredible experience we had seeing her & Horne in LA the year before, when they sort of exploded onto the scene--this is a slightly sad reminder of how good she could be...
sutherland's voice is so deep and wagnerian sounding here =)

You might like to watch June Anderson and Samuel Ramey in this same scene (also on YouTube) and compare the two.
