There was an unmanned Soviet vessel headed to the moon at the exact same time, the Soviets were hoping to beat the Americans there with a pretty sophisticated robot lander, but that mission failed. It might have been that craft headed to the moon. It would have been surprising for them to have been so close, but maybe their trajectory plans were similar for good reason. Maybe there was an optimal course for such a thing (semi-speculation at the end there).

it looks a helluva lot like the thing they were flying in... could have been a reflection somehow.

@Tommyr Lol. Watch. The. Video. Again.
They asked NASA how far the separated part of their rocket was from them. NASA calculated that it was about 6,000 miles away. They concluded that it could not have been the separated part of their rocket because the object they were looking at appeared to be much closer. So, if you let your comprehension skills kick in a little, you would see that the object NEVER WAS IDENTIFIED.

@ufoclips1 John Glen and Gordon Cooper, both Mercury astronauts, saw things either on their space missions or at other times. Glen has his famous "fire flies" incident during his first flight, which he still seems to think may not have been something from his ship. Cooper saw a UFO as a fighter pilot and was involved in another incident where he was in charge of photos and film taken of a craft that supposedly landed at Edwards. He saw the negatives, then sent them to the Pentagon as ordered.
