Battery Explosion

Burning out 3 x D-cells via a low voltage, high current power transformer and a variac. The test current varies between 22 and 34 Ampères at 8 to 16 Volts 50 Hz.
It took about 5 minutes but I have edited the boring part out.

Biggest problem was during the experiment to maintain good contact while the cells build up pressure.

I have built a better rig now and more tests will follow soon on Youtube.

When the batteries explode, don't they spray toxic gunge around the garden? I know some batteries contains some nasty stuff, maybe not all though.

@StarsManny They may do but our plants are growing very well.

They do the same when thrown away with the rubbish and rot away on the tip.

@StarsManny In case you were wondering, D cells contain manganese dioxide, ammonium chloride, zinc chloride, zinc metal, and a carbon electrode. All of those aren't particularly bad, but manganese dioxide has been known to cause birth defects in pregnant women. Other than that, the chemicals are pretty safe. I've taken them apart before. They aren't bad, just really messy.

@EvendimataE Be carefull , you need to monitor the cells temperature so that they don't overheat, best is to use a proper charger as these Li cells will explode if not charged properly.
