find a cheap used bowling ball that more or less fits your span. change inserts if needed and use that as your ball to find the oil line. Have to start somewhere. I guess the proshop assumes that if you're wanting to invest in a top performance ball, you've already tried some of the lesser offerings.

Many bowling centers/proshops will have house balls that should be close to 'most' peoples spans are normally. However, the PAP will be more useful for the more serious bowler who is investing in a few balls, and will already or be willing to drop some dimes picking up a plastic/poly spare ball already -- which it doesn't matter where the pin placement is on it. Voila, a perfect victim to determine your PAP with.

What you do is have another ball that is basically fit for your hand that is a 'low flaring' ball, aka a plastic or polyester ball. Throw that one and that will give you the oil rings that they're talking about. For these stronger balls, it's almost useless to try to figure out what the PAP is on them simply because they're starting to flare so close to the front of the lanes, which will give you an incorrect result.

sorry i should have read comments below before posting... feel free to still reply though :)

to get the oil line you have to bowl it down a lane.... But if i just bought a brand new ball it doesnt have any holes drilled yet! Im confused. Can somebody help? Are you meant to drill the holes and then find your PAP just for the sake of knowing where it is??? Will you have the same PAP for every/most balls?

The word is perpendicular....
So if I have a new ball i have it drilled then i bowl it I take it back to the pro-shop and they can find the PAP then do I have to plug it then redrill it for my PAP?

@lordmoldybutt563 If you have another ball, a pro shop should be able to find your axis off any ball you have.

if he said that they wont drill the ball without you knowing your positive axis point how will u find it out if u need to throw the ball to get the oil ring?

Your local pro shop should have the tools to find your positive axis point
