secular democracies from growing in the Middle East. Plenty of examples come to mind, but one might not do worse than to begin with the illegal coup the US and Britain instituted against the democratically elected government of Mosadegh because he had this funny idea that the profits from the natural resources beneath the feet of Iranians ought to go to Iranians and not to Western rules thousands of miles away.
He says "since the fall of the Soviet Uniion, events are more linking, not contained"
Hmm, does the Internet have any influence now that literally anyone with a cell phone can publish data in virtual reatl-time?
"much more closely linked that during the cold war."
When some dude threatens to burn a koran and riots happen in France...but if the Soviet Union had not collapsed, it would have been contained? This is his thesis?
Dr. Khalidi, I totally agree with you in regard to Taliban not being popular. But, I strongly differ with you in regard to the Middle East (which as I see it is Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, and Turkey). These countries, except Israel, are witnessing a great deal of Islamic resurrection and it is going political. Should democratic election be done in the region, the entire Middle East will turn into Islamist countries.
