you dont have to use hdv tapes. they are exactly the same as dv tapes. the only difference is the label on it and the price. i have a sony hvr z7u and i been shoot hdv 1080i and they look fantastic with mini dv. sony is just ripping u off. do your research and you will find there are both made up of the exact same material and chemicals

@5:45 - I learned back in the 80s when I took a course on video, that you can use a Grey card to set the white balance. I can't remember why though.
