In the book, they were both drinking it and they didn't notice, but when they met up with Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli again Gimli made a remark about how they were both taller and their hair was twice as thick and curly. I like this interpretation better, though.

The book is so detailed, there is no way anyone can put it on film. Some things had to go. To bad, no Bombadil, Too much. The movies are long as they are. But, the films are great, I think JR would have approved!
