The 2010 Dresden Codak Reenactment Contest!

A Marionette Strings Production: http://www.marionette-strings.ca/

This is our submission for the competition. The challenge was to take on one of the Dresden Codak comics and create a live action version with real people, puppets, or models.

The comic we enacted is called Lantern Season.

The comic can be found here: http://dresdencodak.com/2009/12/16/lantern-season/
And the music we used is here: http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/

The project took us roughly a month to put together, with a grand total of 120 video clips taken (and retakes) of the puppet show, half an hour or more of recorded footage for the forest bits, and over 100 sound clips from the voice acting to the foley work. All the sound recorded with the visual footage was scrapped, and we rebuilt the sound from the ground up.

One of the challenges was thinking of a way to tell the story of Lantern Season with only four of us, none of whom wanted to appear in front of the camera. We decided to do a combination of puppets, concealing costumes, and first-person camera to convey the presence of the protagonist.

The hardest clip to film (surprisingly) was the school yard puppet show shot where Kim (main character) passes by the boy puppet. We had a variety of problems from the puppets' hair catching on each other when they passed, to the stick controlling the boy puppet's arm breaking off when we tried to raise his hand.

The video was put together in Final Cut Express, with music converted with iTunes, audio in iMovie, and some of the graphics built in Photoshop and Livetype.

  • Sad... this means that even the boy forgets these events. Now only Kimiko remembers.

  • This is great. The voice of Kim is exactly as I thought it should be. Really inspired. You're definitely the rightful winner. Well done!
