I'm studying Mechanical Engineering; what does one specialize in to learn how to engineer a machine like this!!

@755hp - If you want to actually make machines like this, I'd focus on industrial applications and spend as much time in the machine shop as you can! Experience is tops to know what's a good idea when designing these.

If you want to focus on making the machines move like this, focus on production & machining (might be called Automation at your school), with a heavy focus on CAM software (Mastercam/NX/Catia, etc).

If you want to focus on racing & block work, start working with race teams now!

@755hp What you want to study is called Mechatronics, to build a machine like this you need to know, mechanics (structure), electronics (Motors) and Programming (Interface).

I want to do a machine like this, well not as fancy, for my thesis...
