A psychiatrist, Clive Esmond (Alexander Knox), catches young gunman Frank Clements (Dirk Bogarde) breaking into his house, rather than send him to prison he invites the delinquent to stay at his home as a social guinea pig - Esmond believes he can curb the fugitives criminal tendencies. Esmond's wife Glenda (Alexis Smith) is initially unfriendly towards the handsome delinquent - but Frank begins to slowly seduce her. They make plans to run off together, and Frank plans one last robbery to fund their getaway. The scheme goes awry and the police arrests Frank, Esmond provides an alibi for Frank much to his amazement. Surprised by the doctors, Frank rejects his wifes advances and suddenly he decides that he actually wants to reform. It's easy to mock this melodrama, the dialogue is often risible, the music is over the top and the performances arent subtle.

  • I have a question for LongLostSolitude, ¿is this dvd not from Alpha Home Entertainment?:) Because its image quality it's real good. I read somewhere that Alpha's "The Sleeping Tiger" quality isn't good.

  • @JaliscoDeOjosHazel its from the itv dirk bogarde box set

Oh ok:D thanks for the info and thank you as well for have posted this film:D

  • lee j cobb and william holden made a movie just as stupid as this, bad enough for

me to blissbully forget its title. better if the pair had shot the doc and run off to mexico....thats how the remake will go undoubtedly and be even more terrible, but

all this psychiatric claptrap never found too big a place in my noirish heart...except of

corse for Nightmare Alley where the psychiatris was Helen Walker and mean to the bone.

  • The wife's crack about Little Caesar refers to an old gangster film of that name starring Edward G. Robinson about an Al Capone-like gang boss who finally shows himself to be panic-stricken, a coward and a failure. So quite the opposite of a compliment.

  • This may be melodramatic but it enables Dirk Bogarde to give an edgy and intelligent performance. You can see the developing communication with his audience which was to be the source of his appeal.

  • Actually, I thought the doctor had something going on with his female colleague, who was basically a member of the family (she was always there), and plotted to get rid of his wife. Tx for sharing!
