This irish traditional was sung by Frank Patterson in a remarkable scene in the movie "The Dead" with Anjelica Huston from 1987. The movie is based on a short story of the book "The Dubliners" by James Joyce. I was haunted by the melody and kept it in mind ever since. Well I thought th title was "The last of our dream". Lol. Only recently I found that scene of the movie here on YouTube. Here is the link:

The Lass Of Aughrim
If you'll be the lass of Aughrim
As I am taking you mean to be
Tell me the first token
That passed between you and me

O don't you remember
That night on yon lean hill
When we both met together
Which I am sorry now to tell

O, the rain falls on my heavy locks
And the dew wets my skin;
My babe lies cold within my arms;
But none will let me in

I gave it 5 tries. I began in the morning and ended in the evening. Whenever I felt like, I´ve recorded another attempt. I don´t have a head voice technique, so I´ve counted on the right moment. This is the last approach.
Hope you like it.
Cheers André ☺

  • The most poetic short story ever written--great movie version by Huston--and what a beautiful tenor song.

  • Congratulations!! The Dead is by far one of the most perfect short stories ever written. A masterpiece byJames Joice which turned into a masterpiece in the hands of John Huston and the glorious cast of his film. Your interpretation is very moving, thank you for sharing it.
