Ensemble Musique Ancienne & Ensemble Vocal de Lyon
dir. Guy Cornut

There is very little known about Gastoldi. He was born in Caravaggio, probably about 1556, he died in 1622 in Mantua. In 1581 he was a singer at the Mantuan court, where the Gonzaga family ruled, then in 1582 was "Maestro di Cappella" at the local church of Santa Barbara in the same town. It was in 1590 that Claudio Monteverdi entered the service of the Duke of Gonzaga as a viol player, at the time when his first books of madrigals were being published. It is not until 1609 that we hear again from Gastoldi, as "Maestro di Cappella" at Milan Cathedral. Knowing that Monteverdi remained at the court of Mantua until 1612, we can presume that they were close associates; furthermore we know for certain that they collaborated on certain musical works for the court.

  • Marvellous!!

  • Gastoldis Musik macht süchtig - einfach wunderbar, aus himmlichen Sphären!

  • God bless you for posting this.

  • Burvīga mūzika. Bellisimo.

  • It´s completely curious that since 1598, i.e since more than 400 years, a German sacred song "In Dir ist Freude" exists to "L´Innamorato", and also an organ version by the "unknown" Johann Sebatian Bach (BWV 615), and nobody out of Germany seems to know about. There is a protestant tradition for more than 400 years, the song is very popular in Germany - and nobody notices the connection. Shall that be true ???

  • I am grateful for this upload. We listened endlessly to this record back in the early 1980s in college. It's gorgeous music but has not been reissued on CD and is unavailable on i-Tunes or apparently any other site.

  • Augen sind geschlossen, Herz und Ohren offen. Wunderbar

  • Magnificent performance! Thank you
