The great Chic Anderson introduces jockeys Laffit Pincay Jr., Ron Turcotte, Danny Gargan, Angel Cordero Jr. and Braulio Baeza during the weigh-ins, with exemplary horsemen/commentators Frank Wright and Woody Broun inspecting the field and offering well-wishes to the trainers in the saddling area of the paddock.
Stay tuned for the CBS broadcasts of the 1973 Kentucky Derby and Preakness, as well as many other broadcasts from the past.

  • I'm Susan Anderson...Kelly's my sister and Chic Anderson was my father. It is such a gift to see this precious footage. I remember being in the announcer's booth watching him call the races. It was such a thrill! I have seen these telecasts at the museum of Radio and Television in NYC but now the rest of my family can enjoy them. I can't thank you enough!

  • Happy to make your acquaintance, Susan. I wouldn't have asked that question, but I wasn't sure which person on the tape you were referring to as your dad. I'm glad you and your family can come here and see your legendary father in action. He was the very best race caller, in my humble opinion. It's terribly sad that he passed away at such a young age.

Thank you for your comments, and for subscribing.

  • Amazing to see my father again...thank you so much!

  • @songbirdmcd1 You're very welcome. Who was your father, if I may ask?

  • lovely.

    I enjoyed it so.

    Kelly Anderson

  • You're welcome, Kelly. Your father was a real class act, and what a great voice he had.

    Take care.

  • @songbirdmcd1 Your Dad's calls give me chills. Secretariat fans will always love "He is moving like a tremendous machine" I am very proud of your Dad like you are.

  • secretariat is the legendary horse

  • @songbirdmcd1

My father and I heard your father call the race on CBS radio. Living in Merrick, NY, about 25 minutes from Belmont, we watched the telecast on tv until, just when Secretariat stepped onto the track, we had a blackout. I cursed the television fates but my father, a child of radio, got out his Sony radio and tuned in WCBS 1500 AM.

Then we listened to your father count 'em off.

  • Cool/ Any video on this race is grea.t

  • wow....just like the movie!!! Awesome watching the real thing

  • @deetjay1 i was 11 years old when it took place. Even at that age, I recognized that what I saw was amazing. and to hear all the adults speak of it for weeks an weeks afterward...they still couldn't believe what they saw. A tip for all who watch the belmont - this is racing immortality. It will live on far beyond our lifetimes. I have argue with the'experts' on track quality an breeding enough to know that Sec is still the Go-like aberration . in 38 yrs still no one close.

  • @Soxogram AGREED CHICS CALL should have been in the movie i said that immediately also !

  • I was 25 years old when this race took place...The only sporting event that EVER made me weep with joy...Such a wonderful horse, and Chic Anderson just lifted American off their easy chairs that day...I will take it to my grave.

  • You could cut the tension with a knife.

  • @songbirdmcd1 You're dad was the best !
