what really isn't safe is to heat water in the microwave, if you heat it without (let's say a spoon or fork or whatever... of course non-metal) the water reacts with any touch... it could be coffee or a spoon or whatever... but if you heat water in the microwave with a non-metal spoon this isn't going to happend....

I make my coffee everyday in the microwave and this has never happened to me.......one has to be careful with it.......

The possibility of over heating anything is always there with a microwave and it's up to you to be careful BUT......surely the best way to make instant coffee in a microwave is to mix the coffee in a little water first. Top up the cup and give it 2mins approximately.
That's the way I do it and I've never had any trouble. I figure it must save money doing it this way as you are only heating the exact amount of water required whch is difficult in the average kettle.

I've made coffee in the microwave every single day for the last two decades. I have never seen anything like this. It's just hot liquid. Even if it boils, it's not a big deal. You mop it up. If it really is instant coffee, just stir it until it's dissolved and it will cool down so you can drink it...But it will NOT explode in any case.

@njcourcier actually if you heat water for more than a minute or two it superheats it and is very unstable to being disturbed ive had this happen a few times especially when making tea.
