Dr David Starkey concludes his epic story of our monarchy with a special programme on the history of the House of Windsor.
Far from being stuck in the past, the story of the monarchy in the 20th Century has been one of re-invention. In the space of a few decades our Royal family changed its name, its image and the role it played in the life of the nation.
It embraced new technology and found new ways to engage with the people. As David Starkey reveals, this was a course of action that would take the monarchy to some of its greatest moments of triumph, but also sowed the seeds of its near destruction. But the British Monarchy still soldiers on!

  • A magnificent, beautiful even in old days, master in excellency, gracious Queen.

    All the best from Spain.

  • Wow he is really hateful. She wasn't a saint but your husband cheating on you isn't really something she should have taken lying down. He seems filled with contempt at the idea that she would want to have a "happy" life with a husband that didn't cheat on her. And yes she loved clothes, she loved to get her hair styled, but she also cared for her friends, sons, and people less fortunate. Something her sons try to continue and have said as much. This man is really crass.

  • wat a slam on diana

  • @mrlopez2681 How do you know Diana called the paparazzi? What did Queen Alexandra do?

  • @ybeath529 You do not make any sense. Explain more.

  • @dyhard678 He is right. Arthur and Catherine were married and Arthur died few months later. Catherine then marries Arthur's brother Henry the eight. He then divorces her to marry Anne Bolyn. I guess you know the rest. So he was comparing that tragic wedding and Charles wedding to be the only two weddings where the Prince of wales married in St Paul's. Everyone else married at Westminster Abbey.

  • @KimtheRocker it's not Brian May who's vulgar, it's the populism thats vulgar.

  • @mrlopez2681 You're right. Diana had many, many good qualities, but she was also certainly not the great "saint" that her "worshippers" make her out to be. She was beautiful, inside & out, but was just as flawed as Charles.

  • God save the Queen!

  • Whoa! Starkey is very biased against Princess Diana. I guess he doesn't want to burn his bridges with the Royals by taking her side, but geez...She was a *very* young lady when she married Charles, who was never in love with her and yes he was cheating with Camilla from the beginning. Diana was brought to the family ostensibly as a breeder for the Royals. Treated badly, she finally broke. It is very sad and unfair of DS to pain her as the bad guy, when it simply isn't true.

  • @ybeath529 - yes- in long-term Diana was good for the monarchy, but she most certainly WAS self-indulgent. It's the truth, like it or not. Who do you think phoned the paparazzi when she was in the Mediterranean w/ the Al-Fayed's?? Diana did, This is one of a myriad of examples...I could go on & on. I love Diana, but I will never let that blind me from the real person vs. the image. If she hadn't been so young when she 1st married maybe she would've done what Queen Alexandra did long ago.

  • All but one comment by the narrator proves true. He mentioned the Queen's misfortune continued when Princess Margareth died and eventually the Queen Mother. I don't see deaths as a misfortune but rather a law of nature. I believe that it is not fair to blame or add life's normal processes to the Queen's bad luck....regards from the people of the Philippines
