because politics and public sentiment shifted away from science and exploration
money was routed elsewhere
people lost interest in the moon "been there, done that"
there's no oil, gold, naked women on the moon

@themix92 youre dumb. a permanent, even semi-permanent moon base would allow for much easier access to space experiments involving zero gravity. Certain materials can only be created in such environments.
There are a thousands reasons beyond, "collecting rocks" to study the moon. It's our closest non-atmospheric research station

nasa never returned because the government stopped funding the moon missions
they cost too much
the apollo missions were no more than a political statement, it was to show the soviet union it could be done
since then there has not been any real reason to go back to the moon, been there done that. Nobody wants to pay billions of dollars so that a couple of guys can go to the moon and collect rocks
