With increasing frequency designers are finding themselves in novel contexts addressing unexpected challenges using improvised and invented methods. With an ambition to apply design methods to issues such as the efficient delivery of government services, rethinking infrastructure, disaster relief, and urban change, practitioners are confronting entangled systems whose complexity, scale, and stubbornness require new kinds of responses. This symposium will explore emergent design practices situated at the intersection of socio-technical systems and meaningful change. Invited guests include Fred Dust, Partner and Leader of Systems at Scale practice area at IDEO; Rupal Sanghvi, Director, HealthxDesign; and Nigel Snoad, Senior Advisor UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
