all nonmiltary flights were ordered down, the closest airports were use, Gander is an international airport , we had to use what ever airports could handle getting them in

they show this segment during the winter Olympics 2010, and we have a saying here on the rock, THERE ARE NO STRANGERS ON THE ROCK< JUST FRIENDS WE HAVE NOT MET YET. the people of Newfoundland and Labrador have over the decades have given of them selves again and again , we do not look for praise we do it because it is the right thing to do, humanity , we need to stand together, especially when there are people trying to tear us apart

Halifax is a big airport with a big city nearby. Therefore I would expect more planes would have been sent to Halifax than Gander.

Newfoundlanders are such amazing people!! I live in the States and I have friends that live in Newfoundland and they are the nicest people I have ever met! The world needs more people like them.... <3

It's what great friends do for each other. If it was the other way around, the USA wouldn't hesitate to come to our aid. The two best / free countries in the world. This is how two neighboring countries are suppose to live together. Peace...

I would like to see the whole thing.

Tom Brokaw talked about this during the Olympic Games in Vancouver. It first aired on NBC during the games in Vancouver.

What a wonderful community to take in so many people and all their pain and confusion. Gander gave 7000 people shelter, care and compassion during those days, but for millions more, you were a bright beacon of hope in a time of great darkness. God bless!
Thanks Gander, for all of us. You should be so proud. You demonstrated to millions what true kindness is all about!

On 9/11 I was 16 years old, and had lived and still live in Gander... Never before have I seen such an outpouring of compassion and support for people in a time of need.
Speaking as a Ganderite and as a Newfoundlander, I can say that we would do the same thing time and time again if need be. It's part of what makes Newfoundland such a great place to live, and makes me proud to call this rugged rock my home.
