There are cannabanoid free hemp varieties.
This sort of hemp most definitely has an infrastructure... For clothes paper and other fibrous textiles. Hah.
There are a lot of other plants that produce more suitable oils for combustion.
But I agree that we need to research/develop hemp some more for its alternative properties.
And I completely agree on your point of petroleum. Our dependency on oil, especially when we've had alternatives for a while now, is sickening.

Thank you for your comment. I have a question. The sex of a hemp plant shows 2 weeks after the summer solstice. The ratio is roughly 50/50. You now have a half legal crop. How does that work?
Hemp does not have an infrastructure hence the cost effective problems. Once it does it will be very competitive.
With petroleum we have shifted the biggest transfer of wealth in the history of mankind away from us. That is not responsible and unsustainable.

The male hemp plant can be grown and manufactured legally. They are not economically efficient at the moment (in a lot of cases besides clothes, paper and other fibrous textiles). Although I do agree it's an awesome alternative, the farm land we'd need would be better used for food that we won't need to import. Which is really the biggest problem with alternative fuel sources stemming from food. Growing land is a valuable resource!
