Last Wednesday, November 4th, 2009, a friend and I went outside to talk. We settled upon the park adjacent to our school, and found a bench on which to sit. Upon sitting, we heard a strange noise - was it a bird? Was it a cat? Was it a figment of our imaginations?
Turned out, it was a cat! We noticed her just prior to 11am that morning.
This video begins a little bit after 4pm the same day. In our attempts to get the cat out of the tree, we called the fire department - no success. They said it was too expensive to send a truck out to get the kitty. I flagged down a police officer riding by on his bicycle - he attempted to help by trying to get the fire department or animal control, but again, no dice. Neither would come out. Next, we called an animal shelter to see if they could do anything - they sent a truck out, but due to liability issues, they weren't permitted to actually CLIMB the tree. So they wound up being about ten feet short. (We estimated the cat was about 20 feet up).
An hour or two before the recording of this video, one of our friends that had joined us called a local news channel in an attempt to get them to convince the fire department to come out. They said they'd try and help, so we stayed with kitty to make sure she was okay. A few hours later, when we have no sign of any help - more friends show up - two of them with climbing equipment!
So the fellow that brought the climbing equipment gives it a go - he can't get up to any sturdy branch. He had grabbed the wrong harness.
After standing around for a little while longer, and right as I had begun recording this video (hence the gasp a few seconds in) the kitten had climbed down from the 20ft high spot to the branch that was maybe ten feet high. Much easier to get to. And that's when our friend Joe tries to climb up to reach the kitty, and becomes a hero.
