This video shows the LeafView system, work presented at CHI2007 on designing a mobile user interface for automated botanical species identification. Users take a photo of a leaf and the image is sent via wireless to a tablet PC where a computer vision algorithm is used to identify the species and browse herbarium information about the species.

  • But like that how students are going to learn? :-0

The computer crashes and the person is lost :-(

  • That's a fair question and much has been written on the subject of technology crashing and leaving our perceptual and cognitive abilities without a crutch. My sense is that it would be much like using a calculator and then losing it. From my experience, we've also found that people using the system actually learn more about plant ID as they go because they explore the biodiversity and scientific photos of the system.
