@mikkars250 Thank you. I don't consider this exchange an argument and I respect a friendly debate. It is good for people to exchange ideas while being respectful of differences. I think in these times it is a blessing when ever two people who believe in God can speak without accusations and being overly critical. We can leave the anger to the extremists in both groups who do the rest of us a great disservice.

@mikkars250 I can see where it would seem strange to those who gather in group prayer on a daily basis that others only gather in a large group once a week. There are usually smaller, less formal prayer gathering throughout the week for Christians, like prayer groups and Bible study groups, as well as family prayer. It isn't obvious to anyone who isn't part of the Christian community and so I can see why the Imam would wonder.

@mikkars250 Your original post stressed you weren't after an argument. The prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him, instructed us not to argue with Ahl al-Kitāb except in the kindest way..... Which I believe means going as far as a "Friendly debate".
Salaam.

@MsColdCanada Yes I understand the christian Idea of constant dialog with God, Muslims do the same basically. Solat is more about worship than prayer, which we usually do at the end of solat too. I think Jesus, peace be upon him, mentioned something about not praying like the pharasies ie. making a big show of it in public.
The Imam at our Mosque is from Turkey and speaks little English was asking me about the local christians and wondered why the churches only opened on Sunday :)

@mikkars250 Second reply. Also in prayer Christians are actually called to pray "without ceasing". Which is thankfully not literal since where we should not pray as a public display means we would never be able to leave the house :) but it does mean that we should pray every occasion that we can, which is also many times a day, it just isn't at set times on the clock. I mention that because some have told me they think Christians pray only once a week, at church, but that is not true.

@mikkars250 Yes it is often called that it is found in the gospel of Matthew 6 9-13 and also in Luke. How not to pray is mentioned in the Bible, Christians are called not to pray in public for attention. However there examples from more than 500 years ago which show Christians praying on their knees with their hands pressed together. That is the most common position a Christian would use particularly if it is "a plea" ex: for sick child to get well. Prostrate or bow head is fine, as one can do.

@MsColdCanada The instruction Jesus, peace be upon him, gave was the lords prayer if I am right? In meaning there are a lot of parralels between the lords prayer and Sura Al Fathiah. I seem to remember and I think several times in the Bible mention of prostrating yourself before God? The Jews do this too. I get the impression that maybe how Jesus tought his disciples to pray was not that different to how Muslims pray today but in the Quran Jesus gives no instruction how to pray. Salaam

What mean "Salaat" in Quran?
Who Establish Salaat is called Al-musali. In lugha, AI-musali is horse, which occupies the second spot in a race but runs so close that its ears brush the rear portion of the winning horse-(the one in front), The basic meaning of this root is to follow a leader closely and constantly in every walk of life, So Salaat means: To remain attached to the Laws of Allah, to remain within the parameters of the Laws of Allah and to remain devoted to the Book of Allah.

No where u see in Quran "Iqra Salaat' but always "Aqimo-Salaat". Because Aqimo mean "to Qaim"-----> To establish Divine System as per laws of Book of Allah.
In Quran in Chaper Shoora, Allah says "that "Aqimo-Slaat & consult with Majils Shoora"
Will u translate it "To read 5 daily Ritual Prayers and consult Majlis-Shhora? No .
So it is "Establish the system of state as per Divine law and in order to strengthen that system, cosult Majlis Shoora.
