with Mr. Bizet (harmonium).
Odeon master xP 782, rec. Paris, August 1904.
Although Stradella is named as the composer on the label, it is very likely that this selection was not only arranged by Jean-Baptiste Faure, as he claimed at the time, but actually composed by him. The singer that is here almost drowned by a well-meant (rather than well played) harmonium accompaniment is Albert Piccaluga (1854-1925), on of the finest French concert baritones of his generation. He studied at the Conservatoire and made his debut at the Opéra-Comique in 1880. The following year he took part in the first performance of Offenbach's "Contes dHoffmann". Later he concentrated on Operetta and concert work and was one of the first artists to take the new recording techniques seriously. Between 1899 and 1910 he recorded for a number of major companies.
