It would seem only natural that The Kirby Stone Four would record the Al Dubin and Harry Warren standard, "Lullaby Of Broadway", as Broadway and New York City were central to the formation and early success of the group, which was formed in New York shortly after the end of WWII. All the members were native New Yorkers, with their national exposure being due in part to their performances on 'The Talk Of The Town' (later 'The Ed Sullivan Show') which was broadcast from CBS Studio 50 at 1697 Broadway (at 53rd St.). For a time the group also had their own nightclub, 'The Kirby Stone Fourum', which was located a short distance from Times Square at 304 E.48th St (near Lexington Ave.).
The New Yorker Magazine is also (not surprisingly) a native of New York. Founded in 1925 by Harold Ross and his wife Jane Grant, the magazine was originally envisioned as a sophisticated humor magazine, with an emphasis on journalism, fiction and the arts. 85 years later, the magazine is still going strong and it remains true to Harold Ross' vision.
Given the connection that exists between The New Yorker and The Kirby Stone Four in relation to the arts, sophisticated humor and origins, it seems fitting that this clip features The Kirby Stone Four performing "Lullaby Of Broadway" from 1958, alongside every cover of The New Yorker from the same year. Enjoy!
