'Have you Seen Drum Recently?' is one of the most important films to emerge from apartheid South Africa. Filmed by the father of South African photography, and former photographer and artistic director of Drum Magazine, this is the story of a black magazine in a white world. "Drum" was a magazine about music, but an enigma in a harsh world and a rallying point for Black sophisticates in the anti-Apartheid movement. Based in Sophiatown, the magazine acted as a focal point for a black cultural renaissance which has parallels with that which took place in Harlem in New York in the 1920s.
