This video is my to the recently departed legendary championship basketball coach from the UCLA Bruins, John R. Wooden, the Wizard of Westwood, who passed away in early June of 2010 at the ripe old age of 99!

Wooden had some classic quotes and was without a doubt a major influence in the lives of all those who not only played for him like Bill Walton, Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar), Sidney Wicks, Marques Johnson, Gail Goodrich, and many more but those who admired him from afar. Wooden will join his wife Nellie who died over 25 years ago. He was a graduate of Purdue, and was a born a Hoosier, in Hall, Indiana. How fitting is that? That probably the best coach college basketball has ever seen was born in the hotbed of Indiana basketball? Wooden was three time all-state in high school and lead his team to the state championship in 1927.

Before coaching for UCLA he coached at Indiana State. Other players he coached included Walt Hazzard, Steve Patterson, Richard Washington, Dave Myers, At UCLA he once won 98 straight games at Pauley Pavilion and won 10 national championships. He was the NCAA basketball coach of the year 7 times.

Wooden lived by a seven point creed handed down by his father:

Be true to yourself.
Make each day your masterpiece.
Help others.
Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.
Make friendship a fine art.
Build a shelter against a rainy day.
Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day.
