One possible solution is, that someone off camera inserted, and then took out a stick/rod, which supported it... and why I think this is, that both times, the "rope" had 1 side out side of the camera
Either that or, the thumb movement you do at 1:08 is more important than I think :P

0:18... you never replaced the ball in your left hand, thus it was still in your right hand, that's why the balls needed to be squishy :P
