It's simple. You might survive the fall, but you will never get to wheatley in time to prevent him blowing up the facility with his stupidity. So, it really is a game over, if not instantly.

The good thing about jumping down the pit is that you get the "Pit Boss" achievement if you do decide to jump down the pit. XD
