Where you immediately got this wrong, is doing it in photoshop. Shepard Fairey makes all of his stuff in Illustrator.

but the background of the pic has to be very light, or white for this to work

You could just bring 5 of the same image into illustrator and live trace it. Then adjust the threshold in the trace options. Then delete all the whites. Then you don't have to photoshop it.

google. just cut the background out of it. Make sure it is a big image to! I was lucky to find this photo of slash... it is 300 DPI
