Macbeth thought that by slaughtering his family, He would set fear into macduff's heart and forbid the witches prophecy.
instead it enraged macduff with hatred and revenge and so it led to Macbeth's demise.

Well. It's soooo strange that Lady MB goes to warn Lady MacDuff! LadyMBeth is seen as much better and less ambitious than the Shakespeare's one. Then, a lots of parts have been eliminated (actually in the real tragedy there were parts talkin'about King Edward The COnfessor and it was difficult to insert in that context...)
