PLEASE READ
For my grade 12 English final task, I had to write a report on a topic. I chose to do residential schools since it is something that has affected my family.
This is an interview with my dad, Simeon Nakoochee, a residential school survivor.
He went to the St. Anne's Indian Residential School in Fort Albany, Ontario

This is a news article about the body of Charlie Hunter, a 13 year old boy who drowned in 1974 while saving another student at St. Anne's Indian Residential School.
His body was buried with no consideration to his parents in an isolated area. His parents and supporters are trying to get his remains home so they can finally close their wounds.

  • @tindallpe I agree with you that they should integrate. I believe that they are trying, but its the racism that persists that stops them. Also you are confusing people in that you say it is the dominant society that lets them have special rights to hunt. Actually it is the unbreakable law that gives them the right to hunt, and it is the same law that lets immigrants come to this land and occupy it. If you get rid of their right to hunt, you get rid of your right to be here.

  • terrible sound on this vid.

  • All natives should integrate into society. They should have meeting halls and preserve their heritage. They should become equal to us not better They should have "NO claim to any lands in Canada. If they want they can fish and hunt like anyone else ...no different. They only use Special Status' which we give them to gain land any money and we are the fools that let them do it. Isolation in communities has created a sense of "Inferiority" Our policy is responsible for this result.

  • @TheOnlyOlivaWhispers You're likely right. Unbelievable and sad.

  • @MsColdCanada if there was "none in new brunswick" I believe they -meaning whoever was trying to "save the man" dragged the kids from their home and brought them to where there was one.....

  • What a terrible chapter in our history. I didn't even know it had happened until fairly recently. I went looking to see the list of residential schools in Canada and was relieved none had been in New Brunswick, which might explain why I didn't know there was such a thing, but I'm also very sad that this happened anywhere in the country to anyone.

  • youre dad is a strong man for just talking about this , my dad wont even speak a word... my grandmother told me he used to never stop talking, now he only speaks english as if he never knew his language at all .. such a same i cant learn :(

  • With the greatest respect for your story and willingness to share, I thank you, for helping to educate me about this most sad and deplorable part of my Canadian history. I have a greater understanding and look forward with hope for our children.
