An educational movie about jobs available within the railways of Great Britain during the mid/late 1940's. Covers some of the less glamourous jobs withing the railways including cleaning locomotives, station work and other behind the scenes activities which were the starting point of your career in those days.

  • 7:36 - If only there was an announcement like that these days.

  • Lol at the end gag! Also glad to see all the guys in the works wearing safety glasses... :/

  • Very interesting. My late father's first job on leaving school in 1945 was with LMS at Gloucester, moving coal nearer the tracks, and putting the hot bricks in the carriages during the winter. He went on to spend the next 60 years in plumbing and roofing.

  • Fascinating film...thanks.

  • Did every worker wear a tie?! Or was it because they were being filmed?

  • @mauricemarina I worked with some old steam boys and although they were glad they did the job back then they wouldn't go back to it...at least as a full time job. Many had to work overtime to make ends meet and especially overtime at Christamas to buy presents for the kids. Alot had second jobs window cleaning, decorating etc I suppose that was the benefit of an eight hour day although they were at work almost every day and at all hours. We did have a train builders back then though unlike now.

  • @mauricemarina ..i know mate..heartbreaking isnt it? what in hells name went wrong apart from giving up our identity by letting all and sundry into our once great and proud nation..our shores should have been kept secure and to hell with the rest...work for our people first and foremost..people will gladly work if the jobs are there, the problem is we lost our identity along the way and pride and self respect went with it..

  • "... and you can get a pension at the end of it"

    Question:

    What is a pension?

    ;)

  • wish I had been there! In those days we made locos!

  • back in a time when there was employment for all, awesome stuff.
